Asylum 13 - Ogre Toro
The Asylum 13 Ogre cigar is an extraordinary example of innovative craftsmanship, blending a striking barber-pole wrapper of intertwined Candela and Habano leaves. This unique combination isn’t just visually appealing, it’s a flavor statement.
Wrapper: Barberpole, Candela, Habano
Binder: Nicaragua
Filler: Nicaragua
Factory: STG Estelí (Nicaragua)
Size: 6″ × 52 “ Toro
The Cold Draw :
The aroma is of alfalfa, parsley, white pepper, Kafer lime, eucalyptus oil, and lilac.
Flavors
1st :
Initial puffs from this Ogre have flavors of alfalfa and green peppercorn. A chlorine note follows in the finish, along with an apple wood smoke note and, continuing the first, notes of asparagus, lime, and pine nuts.
2nd:
The second third brings more sweetness into play with the sweeter notes of orange blossom, raw cane, and an increasing pepper spice like green peppercorns, dill, pine tip tea, and a meat-like note as soy sauce reduction.
3rd:
The last third of this had the sweetness fading, and earth notes and leather took a forward position as the main flavor notes. The notes of black apricot, new American oak, and dried black cherry were now involved, and the grassy notes were mostly gone.
The Draw :
I did a punch instead of a cut, The draw is fine with some resistance to it, did a cut for the last third and the draw was smooth and no resistance to it.
The Burn :
The burn is not consistent and burns unevenly with needing to be relit once in the first third.
The Appearance :
This cigar is wrapped in brown and green tobacco leaves. Given its namesake, Barberpole, and the green, I take it to be like an ogre.
The band is black, with white skulls connected by red dots. The name Asylum is on top, and 13 is under in an outlined red-dotted oval.
Final Thoughts:
78 Points
This cigar was not what I was expecting. I was disappointed in the flavors and lack of depth. I can not say I would seek it out, but I am glad I was able to try it.
